Overview

Chopta is often referred to as the 'Mini Switzerland' of Uttarakhand. This trek combines the mystical waters of Deoria Tal lake with the rewarding summit climb of Chandrashila. Witness giant peaks like Nanda Devi, Trishul, and Chaukhamba shining gold in the morning light while walking through beautiful rhododendron forests.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Drive from Haridwar to Sari Village; Trek to Deoria Tal

Drive alongside the holy Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers to Sari Village. Start a short, gentle 2.3 km trek to Deoria Tal. Set up tents near the lake and watch the massive Chaukhamba peak reflect in the water. (200 km drive, 7 hrs; 2.3 km trek, 1.5 hrs, 7,900 ft)

Trek from Deoria Tal to Chopta via Rohini Bugyal

Trek through a dense canopy of rhododendron, oak, and maple. Pass the beautiful meadows of Rohini Bugyal, keeping an eye out for Himalayan monals. Arrive at Chopta campsite. (14 km, 6-7 hrs, 8,900 ft)

Summit Day: Chopta to Tungnath Temple and Chandrashila Summit, return to Chopta

Start early in the cold morning. Walk up the paved path to Tungnath temple (the highest Shiva temple in the world at 12,073 ft). Continue climbing the steep rocky trail to the Chandrashila summit (13,123 ft) for a majestic 360-degree Himalayan panorama. Descend back to Chopta. (8 km, 5-6 hrs)

Explore Chopta Meadows and Local Campsite Activities

Enjoy a relaxed morning. Take a slow walk around the local fields, practice basic wilderness safety survival drills with your leader, and gather for a campfire reflection session on personal growth and group camaraderie. (3-4 km light walk)

Drive from Chopta to Haridwar

Pack up and drive back down through Rishikesh. Arrive at Haridwar Railway Station in the evening, taking back deep friendships and summit achievements. (210 km, 7-8 hrs)

Packing List

  • 50L Backpack with rain cover
  • Comfortable trekking shoes with good ankle support
  • Warm wear: 1 thermal inner, 1 fleece, 1 heavy padded jacket
